Adidas's Samba Jane, the iconic training shoe crossed with a Mary Jane strap in dark chocolate colorway, takes the opposite approach: a stable silhouette destabilized by a single unexpected formal decision. Together they represent the two dominant design philosophies in footwear right now: maximum transformation versus maximum deviation from a known form.
Modularity as the New Luxury Argument
The modular product has become a persistent fantasy across design categories: phones that swap cameras, furniture that reconfigures, clothing that converts. Most of it fails in practice because the seams show. The New Balance Niobium's three-in-one construction is the footwear industry's most credible attempt at the fantasy so far, partly because the shoe category tolerates transformation better than electronics or furniture. You already take your shoes off. Revealing a different shoe underneath is a theatrical gesture that works within the ritual of dressing. Mephisto's collaboration with BEAMS this week, the brand's first foray into merch, makes a different point about the modular object: sometimes the most radical move is not redesigning the product but redesigning the category it belongs to. When the Concept Outruns the Product

If that pipeline matures, the concept car logic currently driving limited-release footwear, where the form proposition matters more than the production reality, will migrate into every product category.
