Two pieces this week reached for the same word from very different directions. The Atlantic argued that the World Cup offers a model of loyalty unbound by borders, a form of elective belonging that transcends nationalism. Separately, Hyperallergic reviewed a new book claiming that the history of printmaking is the history of democracy, tracing how reproducible images distributed knowledge, dissent, and aesthetic experience to people who could never afford a painting. Both arguments are genuinely moving. Both also deserve a harder look.

Mass Access and Its Limits

The printmaking-as-democracy thesis is compelling because it is partially true. The printing press did democratize information. Woodblock prints did carry political imagery to populations that were otherwise visually illiterate in the language of power. But the same technology that printed revolutionary pamphlets also printed propaganda, advertising, and colonial maps. Reproducibility is neutral. What it distributes depends entirely on who controls the press. The World Cup version of the same argument runs into similar friction. The Atlantic's piece on Zinedine Zidane as a heroic figure is gorgeous writing, but the tournament itself is hosted by FIFA, an organization with a corruption record that would embarrass a mid-tier antiquities dealer. The unity is real. The infrastructure of the unity is not democratic.

When the Medium Is Not the Message

The connection between these two stories is not superficial. Both are about technologies of mass reproduction, one visual and one athletic-spectacular, being conscripted into democratic rhetoric while the underlying power structures remain concentrated. Brewster Kahle's argument for public AI and the global brain runs into the same wall: access is not the same as power, and distribution is not the same as ownership. The story of printmaking is partly the story of democracy. It is also the story of every authoritarian regime that ever ran a printing house. Holding both of those things simultaneously is more honest, and more useful, than either myth alone.
