Nature reported this week on wearable sensors placed on the face that are invisible to the eye, a development framed as a medical breakthrough. The same week, Artnet's Jo Lawson-Tancred reviews the landmark Ana Mendieta retrospective at Tate Modern, a show that finally gives the Cuban-American artist her rightful place in art history. These two stories share a body. They just disagree about what the body is for.

Mendieta's Body as Instrument, Sensor, and Signal

Mendieta spent her career treating the body as a recording device, an antenna, a surface that retains impressions. Her Silueta series is, technically, a wearable technology: an interface between a human form and the earth, leaving data behind. The invisible face sensor in Nature's report does something structurally similar. It reads signal from skin surface without visibly altering the body. The difference is that Mendieta's practice asked what the body meant, and the sensor asks what the body measures. These are not the same question, though Silicon Valley has spent a decade acting as if they were.

The Invisibility Problem in Both Fields

Invisibility is the design aspiration for the new sensors because visibility implies intrusion. Mendieta's work was invisible to the mainstream art world for decades, for reasons that were explicitly political: a Cuban woman making earth-body work in the 1970s did not fit the frame the market was building. The Tate show is a correction. But it arrives in the same moment that biotech is building a new generation of tools designed to read bodies without those bodies knowing they are being read. A 2021 paper in Science by Yimu Zhao et al. on imperceptible bioelectronic interfaces argued that invisibility is not just an aesthetic choice but an ethical imperative. Mendieta would have had something to say about who gets to decide that.
