Two stories dropped this week that look unrelated but share the same original sin. Tesla is recalling 3 million vehicles because its flush door handles, a design-forward flex, can trap occupants in an emergency. Meanwhile, Walmart is finally accepting Apple Pay and Google Pay, ending a decade of friction engineered to keep customers inside its own Walmart Pay ecosystem. Both stories are about companies hiding the obvious control in the name of a better experience or a competitive moat. The result, in both cases, is a system that fails the user at the worst possible moment.

Design as Control Surface

The Tesla door handle is a near-perfect metaphor. The hidden release exists because flush handles test better in focus groups, they photograph beautifully, they feel futuristic. But the manual override, the thing you need when the electronics fail and the car is upside down in a canal, is invisible by design. Walmart's refusal to support NFC payments worked the same way: a deliberate obscuring of a standard control to route behavior. A 2026 paper in arXiv CS.AI by Cherep, Singh, and Maes argues that behavioral systems require behavioral tests, that you cannot evaluate a system only in nominal conditions. You have to test it when things go wrong. Neither Tesla nor Walmart did that honestly.

When Friction Is the Feature and Then the Bug

The Highsnobiety piece on menswear brands that take a decade to matter offers a counterpoint: some friction is load-bearing. The brands that endure, ssstein, Auralee, Bode, built slowness into their identity intentionally and transparently. The user knew what they were signing up for. That is the difference between designed friction and hidden friction. Walmart hid it. Tesla hid it. When the friction is finally exposed, recall notices and corporate cave-ins follow. Eugene Whang, industrial designer and former Jony Ive collaborator, has argued that the danger of taste-driven design is when aesthetics override the honesty of function. The hidden door handle is that argument made literal, and now regulatory.
