Authentication Theater in Two Disciplines
The Morrisseau forgery ring churned out fakes for decades because the art market's provenance system is largely social, built on reputation chains and dealer vouching rather than technical verification. The antibody crisis in science runs on a parallel logic: peer review catches argument, not materials. A paper can be methodologically coherent and empirically hollow if the reagent it relies on is mislabeled, and no reviewer checks the freezer. Both systems are confidence games dressed as epistemology. A 2024 paper in PLOS ONE by Steen et al. found that retracted papers continue to accumulate citations for years after retraction, suggesting the correction mechanism is largely decorative.
What Verification Actually Costs
The Morrisseau case is instructive because the agency that cracked it was obscure precisely because serious verification is unglamorous and underfunded. It does not scale.
